What to Do Before a Spray Tan?

A spray tan is an excellent way to get that natural sun-kissed look without worrying about harmful UV rays. If you plan on getting a spray tan, don’t forget to prepare for your appointment!

The Hydrate Salon team offers tips on getting the most out of your spray tan.

1. Consult with Your Esthetician

Have you ever watched someone get a spray tan and thought, “That looks easy enough. I can do that myself”? There’s more to this process than just walking into a room and getting sprayed.

When you arrive for an appointment, don’t hesitate to ask the esthetician any questions. They should be more than happy to walk you through the process so you know what to expect.

Some important topics to bring up include:

  • Do you want to contour?
  • Do you want your face spray-tanned?
  • What shade would work best for your skin tone?
  • Do you have any skin sensitivities they should know?

If you’re getting a spray tan for the first time, we recommend choosing a lighter shade first. It’s always easier to add more color than to remove excessive tanning.

2. Remove Your Body Hair

We love body hair just as much as the next person, but we recommend shaving before getting a spray tan. The process can dry out and discolor your hair, creating an uneven look.

Don’t get a body wax within 24 hours of your appointment, either. Spray tanning open pores can irritate the skin and create unsightly dark marks.

3. Exfoliate and Cleanse Your Skin

You’ll want to have smooth, exfoliated skin before your spray tan so the color can evenly distribute. You can use scrubs, dry brushes, or a loofah at least three days before the appointment.

Don’t forget to pay extra attention to the knees, ankles, and elbows. These areas are typically drier than other parts of the body and absorb more color. On the day of your appointment, shower and thoroughly cleanse your skin with soap.

4. Don’t Put Products on Your Skin

Makeup, oils, lotions, deodorants, and perfumes create a barrier between your skin and the spray tan solution. Even applying a little can result in an uneven tone and random splotches on your skin.

If you must put something on your skin before the appointment, we recommend using a light dusting of baby powder in areas that tend to sweat. This product is easy to wipe off and absorbs excessive moisture.

Don’t worry if your skin tends to dry. Professionals use an oil-free solution that hydrates the skin without affecting the tanning application.

PS: Do you have skincare products with alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids? Avoid using them at least a day before the appointment since they increase cell turnover and make your tan fade quickly.

5. Dress Appropriately

You don’t want to ruin your beautiful new spray tan before even leaving the salon. That’s why it’s essential to wear a loose-fitting outfit that won’t rub off on your skin. Try to find dark or old clothes that you don’t mind getting stained.

You should also avoid wearing accessories. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches will only make it harder to apply the solution to your skin evenly. The same goes for body piercings.

Why Go to a Tanning Salon?

Why not just use store-bought tanning products or visit tanning beds that involve less prep work? First, we don’t recommend using tanning beds because they emit harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer.

As for DIY spray tanning solutions, they’re not always easy to apply well, especially for hard-to-reach areas. It takes a lot of practice to get it right. Even then, you might not be happy with the results.

A professional tanning salon will give you an even, natural-looking tone without the risks. You can also choose how light or dark you want the tan to be. It’s the safest and most foolproof way to get a beautiful, healthy glow.
